The Ocean Literacy Network began in the USA in 2002 with the development of ocean content to support the teaching of geography. The National Geographic Society worked with the College of Exploration on this project which was called Oceans For Life
In 2004 the Ocean Literacy initiative began in the USA, see http://www.oceanliteracy.net The Global Ocean Literacy Network is a way to connect with colleagues around the world by joining the mailing list. Also here on this page it is a place to find all the ocean literacy initiatives worldwide that form the ocean literacy network.
The first Global Ocean Literacy Workshop was organized by the College of Exploration in July 2014 in Annapolis Maryland before the Annual National Marine Educators Conference.
